We’re Black and Blogging: Social Media and 2008 Black Weblog Awards
The internet makes the world smaller, instead of chatting to strangers in AOL chat rooms, people now blog, podcast or what they call social network via myspace and other sites. I have been aware of online personal journals since 2004, attempted to start two blogs focusing on black cultural arts in Jacksonville (latest via my personal myspace), developed a music podcast of neo soul, acid jazz and hip hop (called nokturnalescape radio) in 2007. This year, 2008, I really became interested in alternative media (social media) as a better way to receive and communicate ideas and information. I now subscribe to 40-50 blogs and podcasts through Google Reader on music, personal finance, politics and other random information, have profiles on myspace, facebook, imeem, twitter, attended the first annual Blogging While Brown conference and registered a domain name and launched this site www.tndmedia.net (basically the world according to me).
Can you believe this community has its own awards ceremony, well here is the low down. If these are blogs that are selected in 2009, I will be much more prepared because many of these blogs I have only heard of and not subscribed too. Well regardless, I voted in the 2008 Black Weblog Awards, below these are blogs (or podcasts) in category plus some “blogs I actually read” that should have made the cut but didn’t.
Best Community Blog: The Urban Blogger. I discovered this blog while listening to a panel at the Blogging While Brown conference in Atlanta.
Best Design: Soulbounce. I know this is about design, which I like but also read most of their posts via Google Reader or Twitter, the music content (neo soul, R&B, hip hop) is on point.
Best Blog Post or Blog Series: The Black Snob – “The Associated Press Totally Steals My Black Conservatives on Obama Story” While I prefer the series on the relationship between black woman and their mothers, this series was my second choice. But this is hard because I love the brown female version of Sex In The City, Funky Brown Chick.
Best Business Blog: One Organized Life Blog. It reminds of blogs: Zen Habits and The Simple Dollar
Best Celebrity Blog: ?uestlove (of The Roots) very descriptive and random aspects of his life.
Best Culture Blog: Conversate is not a word., This post about Michelle Obama is the first post I read, got me to subscribe and keep me reading. She’s Bringing Brown Back.
Best Faith Based Blog: Big Is The New Small, just a guest-estimate based off the selection at quick glance.
Best Fictional Blog: Yanni’s Block, just a guest-estimate based off the selection at quick glance.
Best Food Blog: NYAM. It made me hungry just reading through the first few posts on the main page.
Best Gossip Blog: Bossip.com, celebrity gossip on the mainstream and underground mainstream artists and actors.
Best Group Blog: Concrete Loop. just a guest-estimate based off the selection at quick glance.
Best Hip Hop Blog: SOHH.com. Even though the site got hacked by racists and has a temporary blog template, I still like this site but I really like Black Radio Is Back.
Best Humor Blog: The Peoples News. just a guest-estimate based off the selection at quick glance. But I also like Stuff Educated Black People Like
Best International Blog: Black Women in Europe Blog. just a guest-estimate based off the selection at quick glance.
Best LGBT Blog: Pam’s House Blend. I met her at Blogging While Brown, very on point but I mainly read Jasmyne Cannick, which covers LGBT issues, LA and national politics and entertainment news.
Best Music Blog: SoulBounce. from the selection, 100% hands down.
Best New Blog: Keeping Up With The Huxtables just a guest-estimate based off the selection at quick glance.
Best Personal Blog: The Beautiful Struggler: Me, Myself An Eye just a guest-estimate based off the selection at quick glance.
Best Photo Blog: J. Crooms Photography just a guest-estimate based off the selection at quick glance. Plus from the looks I won’t see these images anyway else on the net, there original.
Best Podcast: Friday Favecast. one of the best of collections of podcasts for underground soul and hip hop on the net.
Best Political/News Blog: Jack and Jill Politics, regular black print press move out of the way of Jack and Jill Politics
Best Science/Technology Blog: Urban Science Adventures!, just a guest-estimate based off the selection at quick glance. And if your focus is on technology, even though they could not compete Black Web 2.0
Best Sports/Recreation Blog: Sportaphile just a guest-estimate based off the selection at quick glance, since I’m not really interested in sports except for tennis (Venus and Serena), golf (Tiger Woods) and Olympics (if any black athlete is competing)
Best Style/Fashion Blog: Scandalous Beauty just a guest-estimate based off the selection at quick glance, since I’m not really fasion like that
